Palunawack - A word without a fixed definition. May be used as an exclamation, adjective or noun to describe something of particular excellence, interest or frustration much like a profanity.

Created in 1998 during a word-search mishap, due to a combination of over-enthusiasm, missing tubas and music teachers living in the 70s.

Lyrical philosophers. Kinda.

Just a short one until I get my act together and post something awesome soon. Much big news to come!

I was browsing the Herald Sun again (I am rather self-destructive) and ran across this little gem:

Demi Moore in Twitter war with Kim Kardashian over her use of word 'pimpin'.

I can't beleive I opened this story thinking I was going to get some sort of social commentary. The word 'Twitter' should have been warning enough.

Still, it's interested how seriously celebrities and especially singers influence philosophy and social theory. After all, music is about ideas - lyrics especially reflect a way of looking at the world and often, a take on what is good or bad.

Too bad the most pervasive social theorists and philosophers of our time have the self-awareness and critical facility of a shoe.

And if you just read this and wondered 'what kind of shoe?', we are all very worried about you and think you need to seek professional help.

Is it unfair of me to expect an artist to be an academic? Probably unrealistic of me at the least. And it's also very valuable to hear someone express their perspective on life - often it introduces us to a completely different way of thinking, and challenge is always good. And often that perspective is incredibly enlightened.

But for every "What it's like" by Everlast, there's a "My Humps" by the Black Eyed Peas. Go ahead and read those lyrics. I dare you. $50 says you can't make it all the way to the end.

  1. Gordon, your humour never disappoints! You have just said what I am sure a lot of people think. It seems easier to get carried away by an upbeat melody one can get their groove on to without having to question the level of depth (or lack there of) the lyrics that accompany it may reveal. Keep asking questions; your insights are intriguing :)

    Always,
    Danni

  2. Where is the love - Black eyed peas

Could I wipe everlast off my shoe it would please me to be rid of them so easily.

By the by, I think a stiff drink will suffice in lieu of the 50 AUD.

And I thoughtfully provided it to myself, huzzah!

  4. How am I supposed to prove I actually read through the lyrics? Hmmm? I could stand to have 50AUD to spare when I land in September...
